On Wednesday, the Australian batsman Steve Smith took the number one spot for the first time since the Boxing Day trial last year in the ICC Men's Test Player Ranking. He is overtaken by New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who will lead his team from Friday at the Hampshire Bowl, Southampton, for the finals of the ICC World Test Championship against India. In the drawing of the first test at Lord's, Williamson, who missed the second test against England at Edgbaston because of injury, has slid five points behind the scoring points of Smith's 891 and is second in the batters' ranking.
